okay look… figuring out how to get leads without paid ads has legit been my entire personality for like 18 months now.

im sitting here in my apartment in like central-ish Missour, it’s March 2026 and it’s somehow still 34 degrees and raining sideways. the window AC unit is dripping onto the carpet again (maintenance guy ghosted me three weeks ago), my space heater is making this weird clicking noise, and kevin (the dog) just farted so bad i had to open the How to Get Leads Without Paid Ads balcony door even though it’s freezing. this is the glamorous “digital nomad but broke” life nobody warns you about.

people respond to real shit. not emojis.

short ugly emails that somehow still work

cold email feels dead in 2026 until you stop making it cold.

my list is like 240 people max. friends of friends, old coworkers, that one dude i met at a brewery trivia night who owns a pressure washing business, people from the local BNI group i went to twice before i ghosted.

subject lines i use that don’t die in spam:

  • “yo saw your new truck wrap—question”
  • “quick thing about your google reviews”
  • “hey still thinking about that convo at costco”

body is stupid short. like:

hey [name]

noticed you guys just posted about [specific thing]. whats the one thing thats pissing you off most when it comes to getting new jobs right now?

i get maybe 1 in 5–6 replies. some are “who is this”, some are “lol nothing”, but enough are “actually yeah here’s my problem” that i’ve closed three retainers this way since christmas.

actually leaving the house (painful but effective)

i hate people. but i force myself.

not fancy networking events. those suck.

i go to:

  • the weekly open gym at the rec center (half the guys there own contracting businesses)
  • free saturday workshops at home depot (yes i’m that guy asking questions in the aisle)
  • random coffee shop “entrepreneur meetup” things on meetup.com that have like 7 people

last tuesday i was at this janky bar for $2 beer night and started talking to a woman who runs a small it support company. complained about her husband’s terrible website. i said “yeah i fix that kinda stuff”. we swapped numbers. she emailed me yesterday at 8:42am wanting a quote.

zero ad dollars. just me being semi-social for 45 minutes.

recycling my own old crap

i have like 3 years of half-assed blog posts, youtube videos nobody watched, and twitter rants.

every sunday i spend like 2 hours turning them into fresh posts:

  • old 1800 word article → 4–6 linkedin updates
  • random video from 2024 → chop into 45-second clips (i use capcut on my phone and it’s free)
  • screenshot of a client result → post with the unfiltered story of how we almost lost them

i slap a booking link in my profile. people stumble on it weeks later. it’s not sexy. half my posts get 30 views. the other half get one decent lead. good enough.

the part where i admit it still sucks sometimes

some weeks i get literally nothing. inbox empty. notifications silent. i start doom-scrolling competitor’s ad accounts wondering if i should just turn them back on. then i remember how it felt to see -$1,912 on my statement and i close the tab.

i still send follow up emails that sound needy. i still comment on posts and immediately think “why did i say that”. kevin the dog still looks at me like im a disappointment.

but the leads i do get? they’re real humans who found me organically. they don’t ghost as fast. they pay on time more often. and my stress level is lower even if my income is bumpier.
