As audiences fragmented across streaming services, live sports absorbed a growing share of American television advertising. The reason is simple and it is not about the sport.
Simultaneity is the scarce good
Nearly all other video is watched whenever the viewer chooses, so an audience of any size accumulates across days rather than existing at a moment.
Live sport is watched as it happens because the result cannot be delayed without being spoiled, which produces a genuine simultaneous audience.
Which means advertisers wanting to reach many people at once have few remaining options, and scarcity in a bidded market moves price in one direction.
Skipping is structurally prevented
On-demand viewing lets audiences avoid advertising entirely, either by paying for an ad-free tier or by not watching in the first place.
Live viewing has no fast-forward, and the breaks are built into the rhythm of the game rather than inserted into it.
That makes the exposure more reliable than almost any other video placement, which advertisers price accordingly.
Rights costs push the whole market
Streaming services bidding for sports rights need those rights to reduce subscriber losses, so the value they place on them exceeds the advertising they can sell against them.
Rights fees therefore rise faster than the advertising market itself, and the cost gets recovered through subscription pricing as well as through ad load.
This is why sports has migrated across services, and why following a single league now requires more subscriptions than it did.
Fragmentation reaches sports too
As games spread across broadcast, cable and multiple streaming services, the audience for any individual game is smaller even as the total remains strong.
Advertisers seeking scale must buy across several distributors, with different measurement and no unified frequency control between them.
The scarce simultaneous audience is thus being subdivided by the same forces that made it valuable, which limits how long the current pricing holds.
What the concentration costs advertisers
Budget concentrated into a small number of high-priced windows leaves less for building presence during the rest of the year.
Brands that appear only during a season are recognized in that context and largely absent from consideration outside it.
The efficient position is usually a smaller sports presence combined with sustained lower-cost reach elsewhere, which is harder to defend internally because it lacks a single visible moment.
